Rangers Sack Russell Martin After Poor Start to Season

  • Rangers Football Club have officially parted ways with head coach Russell Martin after just 17 games in charge, following mounting criticism from fans and a Rangers poor start season that left the team in crisis.

Rangers Head Coach Sacked After Disappointing Results

The 39-year-old, appointed in June on a three-year contract, struggled to meet expectations under Rangers’ new American ownership. The club announced, “While all transition periods require some time, results have not met expectations.”

Martin’s final game was a 1–1 draw against Falkirk, after which he required a police escort when angry supporters tried to stop the team bus from leaving. The Rangers head coach sacked faced heavy pressure as the club dropped to eighth in the Premiership — 11 points behind leaders Hearts.

Rangers endured a humiliating 9–1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs and failed to register a league victory until late September. Assistant Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson have also left the club.

Rangers Seek Fourth Manager of 2025

Rangers are now searching for their fourth manager of 2025, following the dismissal of Martin and previous boss Philippe Clement. Former captain Barry Ferguson has been appointed interim head coach for the rest of the 2024–25 season.

Chief executive Patrick Stewart said the club remains focused on rebuilding a “clear football style and identity” and expects “success on and off the pitch.”

    Martin’s Struggles and Squad Overhaul

Martin, who previously managed MK Dons, Swansea City, and Southampton, was hired after guiding the Saints to Premier League promotion in 2024. However, his record at Rangers was poor — one win in seven league matches and only five victories across all competitions.

Under sporting director Kevin Thelwell, Rangers invested nearly £20 million in transfers, signing several English players including Everton forward Youssef Chermiti for £8m. Despite a squad with internationals like Jack Butland, John Souttar, and Bojan Miovski, the team lacked consistency and confidence.

Martin’s tenure was further marred by off-field controversy, including claims that striker Hamza Igamane refused to come on as a substitute during a draw with St Mirren.

The club statement added: “Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them the best for the future.”

    What’s Next for Rangers?

As the international break begins, Rangers must regroup under Ferguson and attempt to revive their domestic campaign. Fans hope the next appointment can finally deliver stability after yet another Rangers poor start season.
