South Africa’s women’s cricket team edged closer to the ICC cricket world cup semi-final after a dominant 10-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in a rain-shortened match at the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The thrilling contest at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium showcased stellar performances that reinforced South Africa’s position as a strong contender in the tournament.

South Africa Women’s Cricket World Cup Victory over Sri Lanka

In a rain-curtailed 20-over match, South Africa chased down a revised target of 121 with ease, thanks to unbeaten half-centuries from Laura Wolvaardt (60*) and Tazmin Brits (55*). The pair’s partnership of 125 runs powered South Africa to a convincing win, highlighting their growing momentum in the competition.

Sri Lanka posted 105/7 in their 20 overs, with Vishmi Gunaratne top-scoring at 34 after returning from a retirement hurt earlier in the innings. Nonkululeko Mlaba led the South African bowling attack with three crucial wickets, including two in the final over, restricting Sri Lanka’s total.

Key Moments and Player Highlights in the Women’s Cricket World Cup South Africa vs Sri Lanka Match

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to build on their previous solid performance against New Zealand. However, the match was interrupted by a five-hour rain delay after 12 overs, leaving Sri Lanka on 46/2. When play resumed under the revised format, the Sri Lankan batting line-up struggled to maintain momentum.

South Africa’s disciplined bowling, spearheaded by Mlaba and Masabata Klaas, put Sri Lanka under pressure. Klaas removed key batters Chamari Athapaththu and Hasini Perera, while Mlaba finished the innings strongly. The Sri Lankan side ended at 105/7, falling short of a competitive total.

Chasing the target, Wolvaardt and Brits showcased composure and skill, reaching the target with five overs to spare. Their unbeaten partnership reflected South Africa’s strong chances of advancing to the ICC cricket world cup semi-final.

South Africa Women’s Cricket World Cup Outlook

With eight points from five matches, South Africa now need just one more point to secure a spot in the tournament’s top four. Their next fixture is against Pakistan, while Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai.

This win strengthens South Africa’s position in the South Africa women’s cricket world cup campaign and builds confidence ahead of the crucial semi-final stages. Fans eagerly anticipate more exciting matches as the tournament progresses.
