Nigeria’s private sector is taking bold strides toward sustainability, transforming the country’s plastic waste challenge into opportunity through Nestlé environmental policies, FBRA waste management initiatives, and innovative eco-friendly plastic recycling methods.

Nestlé and FBRA: Pioneering Nigeria’s Circular Economy

With Nigeria generating over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) has emerged as a leading force in driving change. Founded as the country’s first Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), FBRA ensures companies take active responsibility for their post-consumer packaging.

In collaboration with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), FBRA promotes Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) nationwide, shaping recycling policies and frameworks that strengthen Nigeria’s waste management systems.

Nestlé Environmental Policies in Action

As a founding member of FBRA, Nestlé Nigeria plays a vital role in advancing sustainable packaging solutions. Its 50% recycled PET inclusion project for water brands marks a milestone in eco-friendly plastic recycling methods, making Nestlé the first company in Nigeria to achieve this benchmark under national guidelines.

Since 2019, Nestlé and FBRA have diverted more than 61,000 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills through partnerships with recyclers like Wecyclers, Chanja Datti, and Maladase Ecopreneur Management Ltd. The “Plastic Advantage Programme” empowers over 40 mini-aggregators through training and access to recycling markets, turning waste collection into a viable livelihood.

FBRA Waste Management Initiatives Empower Communities

FBRA’s collective approach has made waste management initiatives both scalable and inclusive. By investing in recycling infrastructure, supporting local collectors, and fostering demand for recycled materials, FBRA turns plastic waste into income for thousands of Nigerians.

Nestlé’s Employee Plastics Collection Scheme also promotes in-house recycling awareness, reinforcing the company’s sustainability vision and encouraging responsible consumption habits among staff.

A Sustainable Future for Nigeria

Together, Nestlé environmental policies and FBRA waste management initiatives demonstrate how corporate collaboration can build a true circular economy. By combining innovative eco-friendly plastic recycling methods, supportive policy frameworks, and community engagement, Nigeria is setting a model for environmental transformation across Africa.
