President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent visit to Italy marks a milestone in diplomatic relations South Africa Holy See, emphasizing unity, shared values, and a renewed focus on collaboration in humanitarian efforts and peacebuilding.

Strengthening Historical Ties Between South Africa and the Holy See

Arriving in Rome on November 7, 2025, President Ramaphosa began his working visit aimed at advancing the historical ties South Africa Holy See. The Vatican, known for its global moral and diplomatic influence, maintains relations with over 180 nations and observer status at the United Nations. This visit underscores South Africa’s commitment to strengthening its global partnerships based on mutual respect and shared humanitarian values.

A Significant Meeting with Pope Leo XIV

The meeting between President Ramaphosa and His Holiness Pope Leo XIV carries deep diplomatic importance. It marks the first diplomatic mission Ramaphosa has undertaken with the newly appointed Pontiff since his ascension to the papacy on May 8, 2025. Discussions during this historic engagement focused on areas such as climate justice, emergency response, peacebuilding, and humanitarian collaboration.

For South Africa, the Holy See represents a vital partner in promoting moral leadership, compassion, and social harmony across the world. These themes align closely with South Africa’s guiding philosophy of Ubuntu—a belief in shared humanity and interconnectedness.

A Legacy of Cooperation

Since the formal establishment of diplomatic relations South Africa Holy See in 1994, both states have maintained warm and respectful bilateral ties. President Ramaphosa’s visit further reinforces this long-standing partnership and opens doors for new joint initiatives focused on sustainability, global peace, and social justice.

Accompanying the President were Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola and Ms. Keneilwe Ramaphosa, reflecting the personal and national importance of this mission.

Shared Vision for Global Compassion

The Holy See’s advocacy for compassion and inclusivity resonates deeply with South Africa’s ethos. As Pope Leo XIV and President Ramaphosa explore pathways to greater cooperation, both leaders highlight a shared vision of a more peaceful, equitable, and sustainable world.
