Two worshippers were tragically killed during the Manchester synagogue incident, which police have now officially declared a terror incident. Three other people remain in hospital with serious injuries following the shocking attack outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation on Thursday morning.

Victims Named in Manchester Synagogue Incident

Greater Manchester Police identified the victims as Adrian Daulby (53) and Melvin Cravitz (66). Both men were attending Yom Kippur prayers when the Manchester synagogue incident unfolded at around 9:30 a.m. BST.

The attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie (35) — a British national of Syrian descent — was shot dead at the scene by armed officers. Police confirmed that the suspect acted alone but that counterterrorism teams are now reviewing possible connections to extremist networks.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to investigators, the Manchester synagogue incident began when the attacker drove a car into congregants outside the synagogue before exiting the vehicle and stabbing multiple people.

The violent assault coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, intensifying security fears within Jewish communities across the UK.

Authorities quickly cordoned off the area, and within hours, police declared terror incident status, triggering an extensive counterterrorism response.

Prime Minister Condemns “Vile” Act

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the Manchester synagogue incident, calling it a “vile and horrific act of hatred.”

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with Britain’s Jewish community,” Starmer said. “There can be no tolerance for antisemitism or extremist violence in any form.”

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed that security patrols around places of worship have been increased nationwide.

Global Reactions and Security Implications

The attack has sparked international concern. Jewish organizations in the United States, Israel, and Europe expressed solidarity with UK worshippers, urging stronger action against antisemitic extremism.

Meanwhile, senior security analysts warned that such lone-wolf attacks may inspire similar acts unless preventive measures are strengthened.

Elsewhere, at the Africa Fintech Summit in Lagos, several delegates paused proceedings to observe a moment of silence for the victims — underscoring the global resonance of the tragedy.

Officials emphasized that terrorism, in all its forms, threatens not only safety but also the unity and resilience of free societies.

Ongoing Investigation

Counterterrorism police continue to analyze digital evidence recovered from the suspect’s home and vehicle. The Manchester synagogue incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine motive and possible affiliations.

Police have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity to the anti-terror hotline.
