Building Health Sovereignty: China Boosts Southern Africa Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
In a major stride toward regional health sovereignty, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), UNAIDS, the Government of China, and the Global Health Innovation Institute (GHII) have officially agreed to advance collaboration on Southern Africa pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The agreement follows an extensive joint assessment of production facilities in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. The high-level delegation evaluated existing capabilities across biotechnology, genomics, and diagnostics, identifying priority areas to help nations expand the domestic production of quality-assured medicines.

Moving From Ambition to Practical Action
For readers following our Health coverage on the Afrikeye homepage, this collaboration is a critical response to a persistent crisis. More than half of all people living with HIV who are not receiving lifesaving antiretroviral treatment reside in sub-Saharan Africa.
By drastically scaling up Southern Africa pharmaceutical manufacturing, the region aims to reduce its heavy reliance on imports and secure timely access to essential health products. Partnering with China provides a unique opportunity to directly connect international investment and technology transfer with growing local capacity.
“This exchange was about moving from ambition to practical action,” stated Eva Kiwango, Director and Representative of the UNAIDS Office in China. She emphasized that while the region has the capacity to expand production, it requires sustained investment, aligned regulatory frameworks, and innovative financing.
A New Era of South-South Cooperation
This strategic alignment comes at a pivotal moment, closely following UN Day for South-South Cooperation. Officials from China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration (NDCPA) noted that leveraging complementary strengths in policy and market development will fundamentally enhance health security.
Key priorities identified during the exchange include developing a regional list of essential HIV and reproductive health commodities, strengthening demand forecasting, and establishing pooled procurement to create predictable markets for African manufacturers.
