The UK government is set to unveil an ambitious digital NHS service 2027, promising to reshape healthcare delivery through a new virtual NHS hospital England. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will announce the initiative at the Labour Party’s annual conference, describing it as part of a “new world” for the National Health Service.
A New Era for NHS Online Appointments
The upcoming NHS online hospital service aims to reduce waiting times and modernize patient care by allowing assessments, consultant check-ups, and follow-ups to be done virtually. Patients opting for the digital system will be managed by a dedicated team of online doctors through the NHS app.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed excitement about the project, noting its success in pilot hospitals such as University Hospital Southampton and Moorfields. “It’s about modernising the NHS and helping it move with the times,” he said during an interview with BBC Breakfast.
Through the app, patients will also be able to schedule scans, tests, or procedures at local community diagnostic centres, improving convenience and reducing pressure on traditional hospital systems.
Virtual NHS Hospital England: Launch and Focus
The rollout of the virtual NHS hospital England is scheduled to begin in 2027, focusing initially on specialties where in-person treatment is rarely required — such as ophthalmology, gynaecology, and digestive conditions. Only areas deemed safe for virtual management will be included, according to NHS England.
Officials project that the online hospital could deliver up to 8.5 million digital appointments and assessments within its first three years — quadruple the capacity of an average NHS trust. This expansion in NHS online appointments is expected to give patients more flexibility and control over their care while freeing up in-person capacity for those needing direct medical attention.

Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that Labour’s responsibility “is not just to celebrate the NHS, but to make it better.” NHS England Chief Executive Sir Jim Mackey confirmed that the digital NHS service 2027 aligns with the core goals of the NHS’s 10-year plan, focused on innovation and patient empowerment.
Existing digital initiatives will be expanded under this model. For instance, University Hospital Southampton’s virtual service for inflammatory bowel disease patients reduced follow-up appointment waiting times by 58%. Similarly, Moorfields Eye Hospital’s online referral system enabled over half of non-emergency eye patients to be treated without in-person consultations.
Addressing Challenges and Concerns
While experts have praised the digital transformation, some have urged caution. Daniel Elkeles of NHS Providers called the new NHS online hospital service a “significant development,” stressing the importance of preventing digital exclusion and protecting patient data.
Dr Becks Fisher of the Nuffield Trust added that more clarity is needed about staffing, safety, and the transition between virtual and physical care. “This service will only be safe and suitable for certain patients. How will we make sure it is kept to them?” she asked.
Broader NHS Digital Expansion
Alongside the virtual NHS hospital England, the NHS is also launching a new online GP booking system to replace the chaotic “8am scramble.” The system allows patients to request same-day appointments or clinician callbacks digitally.
Wes Streeting said this move is part of bringing general practice into the 21st century: “If we don’t change with the times, the NHS will become less relevant and less accessible.”
