The landscape of orthopedic surgery in Tunisia has taken a significant leap forward, following a major medical equipment donation to the Cap-Bon region. Serving a population of approximately one million people, the Mohamed Tahar Maamouri University Hospital stands as the area’s sole specialized orthopedic center, Shouldering an immense clinical burden that often stretches its resources to the limit.
In 2025 alone, the hospital’s orthopedic department managed over 25,000 outpatient consultations and provided critical inpatient treatment to more than 4,500 patients. This staggering volume becomes even more pronounced during the summer months. Driven by a massive surge in regional tourism, the local population spikes, leading to an inevitable rise in severe trauma cases—particularly those stemming from traffic accidents. During these peak seasons, the demand for emergency orthopedic surgery in Tunisia routinely pushes the hospital’s operational limits.
Overcoming Surgical Bottlenecks
Historically, insufficient imaging equipment in the operating theatres created a severe bottleneck. The lack of adequate surgical imaging caused persistent delays in procedures, prolonging patient suffering and mounting pressure on the already overworked orthopedic department.
Recognizing this critical infrastructure gap, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) intervened by delivering a state-of-the-art surgical C-arm fluoroscopy system to the hospital. This advanced technology is fundamentally transforming how orthopedic surgery in Tunisia is performed at the facility. By providing surgeons with high-resolution, real-time imaging during operations, the C-arm enables the pinpoint positioning of bones and the highly precise placement of surgical implants. It is especially vital for conducting minimally invasive procedures, directly contributing to safer, more effective medical interventions.

A 20 Percent Boost in Surgical Capacity
The deployment of this modern system has yielded immediate, tangible results. With the C-arm now in active daily use, hospital administrators project that their overall daily surgical capacity will increase by an impressive 20 percent.
Beyond simply performing more surgeries, the technology allows operations to be completed more efficiently, drastically reducing the waiting time between procedures. This upgrade is expected to dramatically shorten the average hospital stay for patients, free up vital bed space, and ensure rapid access to both scheduled and emergency surgical interventions.
Ultimately, TİKA’s strategic intervention extends far beyond a single piece of equipment. By accelerating patient treatment processes and vastly improving the efficiency of healthcare services in the Cap-Bon region, the project sets a robust new standard for orthopedic surgery in Tunisia. The initiative underscores TİKA’s ongoing commitment to bolstering healthcare infrastructure across the country, ensuring that life-saving treatments are both high-quality and widely accessible.
