Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the IBSA Leaders’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the india brazil south africa partnership reaffirmed its growing role in shaping global development, democratic collaboration, and cross-regional progress. Hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the summit highlighted deeper political coordination and expanding cross-border cooperation projects among the three nations.
IBSA strengthens ties among three major democracies
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that IBSA represents far more than a trilateral dialogue—calling it an essential platform connecting three continents, three major democracies, and three globally significant economies. He noted that the meeting aligned with the first G20 Summit held on African soil and marked the end of four consecutive G20 presidencies by Global South nations, including recent leadership from IBSA members.
These developments, he said, led to multiple initiatives focused on sustainable growth, multilateral reform, and human-centric development—all aligned with the vision of ibsa economic cooperation.
Commitment to reform and human-centric development
Calling the meeting “timely,” Prime Minister Modi stressed that global governance institutions remain outdated and must reflect 21st-century realities. He urged IBSA to deliver a strong message advocating for reforms, particularly within the UN Security Council.
On counter-terrorism, he emphasized the need for coordinated action and called for eliminating double standards, highlighting that a unified IBSA approach can strengthen cross-border cooperation projects in security and governance.

Proposal for IBSA Digital Innovation Alliance
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the transformative potential of technology in advancing human-centric development. He proposed the establishment of an “IBSA Digital Innovation Alliance,” designed to facilitate the sharing of Digital Public Infrastructure—such as UPI, CoWIN health systems, cybersecurity frameworks, and women-led tech initiatives.
This initiative would serve as a major step in expanding the india brazil south africa partnership and supporting long-term ibsa economic cooperation.
Expanding cooperation in food security, farming, green energy and health
Prime Minister Modi stated that IBSA members can complement one another’s development paths. He encouraged partnerships in millets, natural farming, health security, green energy, disaster resilience, and traditional medicine—key drivers of sustainable growth.
He also stressed the importance of developing safe, trustworthy, and human-centric AI norms. Modi invited IBSA leaders to attend the AI Impact Summit in India next year, offering another opportunity to strengthen cross-border cooperation projects.
