The Ghana Company 5, widely known as GHANCOY 5, recently spearheaded a vital healthcare initiative under the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB). Led by Combat Team Commander (CT Comd) Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Kweku Danful, GHANCOY 5 delivered a substantial medical donation to the Guinea-Bissau Military Hospital (HMP) on September 16, 2026.
This medical handover forms a core component of the planned Civil-Military-Cooperation (CIMIC) activities by GHANCOY 5. The primary goal is to sustain goodwill between the peacekeeping contingent and the local population while actively winning hearts and minds. Through this targeted effort, GHANCOY 5 reaffirms the importance of cross-border partnerships in promoting peace, security, and economic stability across West Africa.
Essential Relief for Vulnerable Patients
During the presentation in Bissau, Colonel Ramalho Cunda, the Director of the Guinea-Bissau Military Hospital, expressed profound gratitude to the CT Comd and the entire GHANCOY 5 team. He revealed that the facility heavily relies on such support because it virtually offers free healthcare to numerous patients who cannot afford standard outpatient services.
Because medical facilities in Guinea-Bissau are often heavily burdened, this intervention by GHANCOY 5 is exceptionally timely. Col Cunda assured the delegation that the life-saving medication will be strictly utilized to bring immediate relief to financially strained patients and their families.
The medical supplies donated by GHANCOY 5 target some of the most critical healthcare needs at the hospital, including:

- Antibiotics
- Hypertension medication
- Diabetes medication
- Non-medical hospital consumables
Strengthening Civil-Military Relations
Lt Col Danful emphasized that the GHANCOY 5 gesture aims to support both military personnel and civilians who face financial barriers to medication. He expressed optimism that the medical items would significantly alleviate financial burdens on patients and accelerate their recovery.
The CT Commander was supported by senior GHANCOY 5 personnel, including Second-in-Command Major Collins Nkansah, Senior Medical Officer Major Sylvester Alhassan, and Logistics Officer Major Prince Opoku Agyemang. This deployment operates under the broader mandate of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to drive sustainable peace and security in the region.
