Torit-based network outlines action plan to boost political activism civil society and increase political participation and engagement.
South Sudan Civil Society Develops Plan to Strengthen Political Participation in Torit
In Eastern Equatoria, over 70 civil society members gathered in Torit to create a unified action plan aimed at enhancing governance in South Sudan, promoting civic education, and deepening political participation and engagement. The initiative, supported by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), represents a renewed effort to connect citizens with democratic processes through grassroots involvement.
“We are on a transformative path,” said Jimmy Kilang, a dedicated member of the Civil Society Network. “Through constructive dialogue, we’ve recognized that unity is our strength. Only by working together can we overcome obstacles and truly advocate for our communities.”
Strengthening Governance Through Collective Action
The Torit dialogue, facilitated by Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), focused on empowering civil society to influence decision-making, particularly as the country approaches vital electoral and constitutional milestones.
UNMISS Civil Affairs Officer, Tahir Cevik, explained, “We aimed to boost their engagement ahead of key democratic exercises, ensuring citizens understand their rights and responsibilities in a participatory government.”
This workshop is a cornerstone of wider efforts to strengthen governance in South Sudan by rebuilding relationships among civil society groups, reviving neglected networks, and fostering transparent communication between citizens and authorities.
Civil Society’s Role in Peacebuilding and Accountability
The event concluded with the development of a joint action plan focused on improving internal management, sustainability, and accountability within civil society organizations. The newly appointed chairperson of the civil society committee in Eastern Equatoria, Lotunyeng Alphonse, emphasized that civil society must lead by example.
“We need influential leaders to advocate for peace,” he stated. “Accountability from authorities and political activism civil society are key to building a prosperous, united nation.”
A Path Toward Inclusive Democracy
This initiative is part of a broader trend across South Sudan to revive democratic institutions and ensure that political participation and engagement are accessible to all citizens—not just the elite. These efforts support the larger vision of a stable, inclusive democracy rooted in shared responsibility and active civic involvement.
