Google has reinforced its commitment to empowering African talent through AI courses for African youth and announced a $2.25 million investment in supporting AI initiatives across the continent. The launch of the AI Skilling Blueprint for Africa aims to create an AI-ready workforce and strengthen ai skilling programs in Africa.

Google’s AI Skilling Blueprint

Unveiled in Lagos, Nigeria, the blueprint provides governments with a step-by-step roadmap to develop three critical cohorts: AI Learners, gaining foundational AI knowledge; AI Implementers, professionals integrating AI into their work; and AI Innovators, deep technical experts designing the next generation of AI solutions.

This initiative complements broader google ai for african startups programs and targets skill development in universities across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. Institutions like FATE Foundation and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) are among the first to receive support from Google.org’s $7.5 million Skilling Fund.

Funding for African Projects and Data Modernization

Google’s $2.25 million funding also supports organisations building trustworthy public data sets in collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Africa, UN DESA, and PARIS21. These efforts will modernize national statistical infrastructure, enabling evidence-based policymaking to tackle challenges from food security to economic growth.

Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, said:
“For Africa to drive sustainable development, evidence-based policymaking is indispensable. Building a Regional Data Commons empowers institutions with the data and tools to make strategic choices.”

Building the AI Ecosystem

The funding extends to expert social impact organisations like JA Africa and CyberSafe Foundation, focusing on online safety and digital literacy. Doron Avni, Google’s Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy, emphasized:
“Africa’s AI moment is now, and Google is committed to being a partner for the long haul.”

The initiative ensures African youth are not left behind in the rapidly evolving tech landscape, providing them with skills, resources, and confidence to lead in the AI-driven future.
