Voters across Caerphilly are casting their ballots today in a crucial Caerphilly by-election, set to decide the Hefin David replacement in the Welsh Senedd. Polling stations are open from 07:00 to 22:00 BST, with the election results expected early Friday morning.

By-Election Marks Important Transition for Caerphilly

The vote follows the sudden passing of Labour’s Hefin David on 12 August at age 47. David had served as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Caerphilly since 2016 and was known for his deep community engagement and advocacy for education and housing.

Eight Candidates Compete to Fill the Vacancy

A total of eight candidates are contesting this Caerphilly by-election, representing all major political parties. The successful candidate will hold the seat until May 2026, when Wales holds its next full parliamentary election under the newly expanded Senedd structure.

Inclusive Voting and Youth Participation

In a reflection of Wales’ progressive voting system, 16 and 17-year-olds are eligible to vote in this Caerphilly by-election, and no photo ID is required at polling stations. This change aims to boost youth participation and ensure broader community representation.

Full coverage of the election results, reactions, and expert analysis will be available across BBC digital platforms, radio, and television.
