Africa CDC Leads Emergency Response After North Darfur Hospital Attack

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has launched a large-scale emergency operation in response to the devastating assault on the Saudi Maternity Hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur. The agency’s swift action highlights the urgent need for crisis management strategies Sudan to sustain essential health services and prevent secondary disease outbreaks.

The attack, which occurred on 28 October 2025, left hundreds dead or injured, including patients and caregivers, while several healthcare workers were abducted. The destruction has severely limited access to medical care for thousands of displaced residents.

Urgent Public Health Action and Support

Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, described the event as “not only a human tragedy but a public health emergency.” He emphasized that sudan public health support must prioritize saving lives, restoring hospital operations, and ensuring that health facilities and workers remain protected.

Africa CDC has partnered with the African Union Humanitarian Affairs Division to deploy emergency medical teams, laboratory specialists, and outbreak-control experts. Their joint mission focuses on containment efforts, biosafety, and restoring vital health services across the affected areas.

Strengthening Outbreak Control and Health Security

The agency’s Epidemic Intelligence team is collaborating with Sudan’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to verify data, assess risks, and monitor possible outbreaks of cholera, dengue, measles, and diphtheria. These diseases have been intensified by ongoing conflict, displacement, and restricted access to care.

The north darfur hospital attack aid initiative underscores Africa CDC’s focus on regional biosecurity. The agency also warned against attacks on laboratories and biomedical sites that handle infectious pathogens, stressing the global risks they pose if compromised.

Collaboration for Long-Term Health Recovery

Africa CDC continues to call for an immediate cessation of violence against medical facilities and personnel. It also urges all parties to allow humanitarian access and uphold international humanitarian law. Through coordinated crisis management strategies Sudan, the agency aims to reinforce outbreak response systems, rebuild critical infrastructure, and enhance health resilience.
