The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has strongly condemned the recent attacks in Kalogi, South Kordofan, Sudan, where more than 100 civilians—including women and children at a pre-school—were reportedly killed. These deliberate assaults on children, educators, medical personnel, and civilians assisting the wounded represent a clear violation of international humanitarian and human rights law.

Urgent call for ceasefire and civilian protection

Youssouf called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to halt the bloodshed. He emphasized the Sudan protection of vulnerable groups, including children, women, and the elderly, in line with international law. Humanitarian agencies must have unrestricted access to deliver lifesaving assistance to affected communities.

He stressed the importance of accountability, urging independent investigations to ensure perpetrators of these heinous acts face justice.

Escalating violence against civilians

The Chairperson expressed deep concern over the repeated atrocities in South Kordofan, including aerial bombardments, drone strikes, and attacks on essential civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools. These actions highlight the ongoing Sudan violence against civilians, causing severe human suffering and instability in the region.

African Union support and international cooperation

The African Union stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and remains committed to working with regional and global partners to prevent further atrocities. The AU also supports initiatives involving African Union peacekeepers Sudan attacks, aiming to protect civilians and restore stability through dialogue and peacebuilding efforts.

The Chairperson reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to promoting peace, ensuring justice for victims, and enabling humanitarian access to communities affected by the crisis.
