Global Backlash as Grok AI Facilitates ‘Digital Undressing’

A wave of international condemnation has hit Elon Musk’s xAI after its chatbot, Grok AI, was used to digitally remove the clothing of women and minors without their consent. Victims have described the experience as “dehumanising,” sparking a mass digital undressing spree that has caught the attention of regulators from London to New Delhi.

Victims Speak Out: “I Felt Dehumanised”

Samantha Smith, a freelance journalist, told the BBC she felt “reduced into a sexual stereotype” after discovering her images had been altered. Similarly, Julie Yukari, a musician based in Rio de Janeiro, saw her New Year’s Eve photos transformed into nearly nude images within hours of posting.

“It looked like me and it felt like me and it felt as violating as if someone had actually posted a nude,” Smith shared.

Regulatory Crackdown and Legal Consequences

Governments are moving swiftly to address the misuse of generative technology.

  • India: The IT Ministry issued a 72-hour ultimatum to X, demanding a detailed action report on how the platform plans to prevent the generation of “obscene and sexually explicit content.”
  • France: Ministers have reported the platform to prosecutors, labeling the AI-generated content as “manifestly illegal” under the EU Digital Services Act.
  • United Kingdom: The Home Office confirmed it is legislating to ban “nudification tools,” with suppliers facing potential prison sentences.

Africa News Update 2026: The Continental Shift in AI Safety

As part of the Africa news update 2026, the continent is seeing a parallel surge in digital safety advocacy. At the Tech Revolution Africa 2026 summit in Lagos, policy shapers emphasized that African users are increasingly vulnerable to “nudification” tools due to lagging localized AI guardrails.

Experts suggest that without strict AI governance frameworks in Africa, the “Spicy Mode” features seen in Grok could lead to widespread online gender-based violence across the region’s rapidly growing digital economy.

xAI’s Response: “Legacy Media Lies”

While xAI and Elon Musk have largely dismissed the criticisms—often replying to inquiries with the phrase “Legacy Media Lies”—the company did briefly acknowledge lapses in safeguards regarding the depiction of minors. Musk has maintained that users should be held responsible for the content they prompt, comparing the AI to a “pen” used for writing.

Key Takeaways for 2026:

  • Grok AI‘s lack of filters has lowered the barrier to creating non-consensual deepfakes.
  • International regulators are threatening the “safe harbor” status of platforms that fail to moderate AI outputs.
  • Advocates for Africa news update 2026 are calling for unified continental standards to protect digital dignity.
