Beijing Strengthens Ties in Africa Amid G20 Summit

US President Donald Trump’s absence from this year’s G20 summit in Johannesburg has created a leadership opportunity for China to expand its influence across Africa. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent Premier Li Qiang as his top emissary, marking China’s growing role in multilateral engagement on the continent.

South Africa, holding the G20 presidency, is emphasizing priorities such as debt relief, economic growth, climate action, and clean energy transition. This aligns with China’s strategic interests, offering the country a platform to advance the africa-china growth strategy.

Expanding African Partnerships

Li Qiang’s visit to Zambia—the first by a Chinese premier in 28 years—highlighted Beijing’s commitment to African development. The visit resulted in a $1.4 billion agreement to rehabilitate the Tazara Railway, enhancing rail-sea connectivity between Tanzania and Zambia. China’s investments in infrastructure and energy continue to drive the africa-china growth strategy, benefiting both African economies and Chinese firms.

According to Zhiqun Zhu, professor of political science at Bucknell University, “With the US stepping back, China and EU nations become the focal points of global leadership at the summit, offering African countries stable partners for development.”

Strategic Messaging at the G20

China is positioning itself as a problem-solver in areas like the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and governance. This demonstrates Beijing’s commitment to multilateralism and contrasts with US unilateral actions. Jing Gu, political economist at the UK’s Institute of Development Studies, stated, “China is not automatically replacing US leadership, but it creates space to present itself as a predictable partner, emphasizing global stability and cooperation.”

African Economic Opportunities

The continent’s mineral wealth, growing population, and energy demands make Africa a crucial partner. China’s export of solar panels to African nations rose by 60% in the 12 months to June 2025, highlighting a tangible step in the africa-china growth strategy.

Through investments in renewable energy, infrastructure, and trade facilitation, China strengthens its diplomatic relations while supporting African nations’ development goals.

The Broader Diplomatic Picture

China’s engagement underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in the Global South. With programs targeting energy, infrastructure, and governance, China demonstrates a consistent approach to supporting development while reinforcing its global influence. This approach enhances south africa representation and broader diplomatic relations enhancement, building trust across multiple African countries.
