South Africa’s Energy Future with AI Implementation in Eskom

The University of Pretoria (UP), Eskom, and the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) have launched a groundbreaking initiative to harness AI solutions for African utilities. This collaboration aims to integrate artificial intelligence with practical applications to enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability across South Africa’s power systems.

The new Eskom-SANEDI Chair in Artificial Intelligence in Energy was formalized through a memorandum of agreement (MOA), combining academic research, industry experience, and national energy policy to address the country’s pressing energy challenges.

Practical Applications of AI-Driven Energy Management

Nearly one in eight South Africans still lacks reliable electricity. By leveraging AI implementation in Eskom, the initiative targets increased energy efficiency and improved grid reliability. The Chair also serves as a training hub for future engineers, data scientists, and energy innovators.

Hosted by UP and aligned with the South Africa Centre for Industry and Technology (SACIT), part of the World Economic Forum’s global C4IR network, the program ensures AI solutions are scalable, evidence-based, and applicable to national and global energy needs.

Professor Francis Petersen, UP’s Vice-Chancellor, emphasized the initiative’s dual impact: enhancing research capabilities and providing tangible benefits to South Africa’s energy sector. “This Chair equips our students and researchers with advanced AI tools to innovate across the energy sector,” he said.

Key Focus Areas for AI Implementation in Eskom

Prudence Madiba, Eskom’s General Manager for Research, Testing, and Development, highlighted the transformative power of AI in the energy sector:

  • Predictive maintenance for infrastructure
  • Optimized grid performance
  • Integration of renewable energy sources
  • Enhanced operational efficiency

The Chair will focus on advanced technologies such as small modular reactors, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and energy storage solutions, supporting AI-driven energy management strategies across South Africa.

Strategic Collaboration for National Energy Innovation

Dr Titus Mathe, SANEDI CEO, described the initiative as a convergence of science, policy, and innovation. Combining UP’s research, Eskom’s operational expertise, and SANEDI’s national mandate ensures practical tools for improving energy reliability, affordability, and sustainability.

“Together, we are demonstrating what it means to think globally, act locally, and innovate for impact,” said Dr Mathe.

The project also supports local beneficiation, circular economy initiatives, and material reuse while cultivating a new generation of engineers, data scientists, and innovators through research projects, internships, and knowledge exchange programs.

Conclusion: Africa’s AI-Driven Energy Transformation

With this strategic partnership, South Africa sets a precedent for AI solutions for African utilities, showing how AI can transform national grids while empowering local talent and driving sustainable growth. The initiative promises a future where energy is reliable, efficient, and intelligent, paving the way for broader adoption of AI-driven energy management across the continent.
