The Africa Trade Gateway (ATG) has launched a new national adoption awareness initiative in Rwanda, marking a major step forward in Africa’s journey toward economic integration and digital trade facilitation. This collaborative effort between the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat aims to revolutionize how businesses conduct trade across the continent.

Designed as a one-stop digital ecosystem, the ATG helps African businesses connect with trusted partners, secure financing, complete cross-border payments, and access new markets confidently—creating real cross-border trade benefits Africa needs to thrive.

Transforming Trade Through Digital Integration

According to Alexis Kabayiza, Chief Technical Advisor at Rwanda’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, the initiative reflects a new chapter in Africa’s economic journey:

“The Africa Trade Gateway represents more than technology; it symbolizes Africa’s readiness to define its digital destiny. Digital trade will be a cornerstone of industrialization, inclusion, and resilience.”

The Government of Rwanda, a key partner in local implementation, has encouraged private sector leaders to embrace digital trade as a transformative tool for achieving the AfCFTA’s promise of trade liberalization.

Driving Economic Growth with the Africa Trade Gateway

Emeka Onyia, Director of Digital Banking at Afreximbank, highlighted the impact of the platform:

“The Africa Trade Gateway is a game-changer for African trade — the boldest economic project of our time. Intra-African trade is still under 15%, showing that we don’t trade enough among ourselves. This initiative will take us from concept to community, from potential to impact.”

By enhancing digital trade facilitation Africa wide, the ATG connects buyers, sellers, financial institutions, and logistics providers to streamline trade operations. This ecosystem supports AfCFTA’s broader vision of a single integrated African market while promoting economic inclusion and job creation.

Strengthening East Africa Trade Agreement Framework

The East Africa trade agreement gains new momentum through Rwanda’s adoption of the ATG. The platform aligns regional efforts to standardize trade processes, making it easier for small and medium enterprises to participate in cross-border commerce.

Felix Kabara Chege, CEO of Real Sources Africa, emphasized this during the event:

“The ATG is not just a system—it’s the gateway to Africa’s next economic era. Africa’s trade future is digital, and the Africa Trade Gateway is the highway that will get us there.”

The launch event brought together senior government officials, bankers, diplomats, importers, exporters, and business leaders, signaling a unified push toward a more connected and digitally empowered Africa.
