Across Goma in eastern DRC, the BI‑ESTHER Foundation and MONUSCO’s Gender Section marked the International Day of the Girl (14 October) by bringing together around fifty girls from local groups for a workshop centered on empowerment through education, peacebuilding, and ending gender-based violence. United Nations Peacekeeping

“Girls in North Kivu have endured deep suffering during this war,” said executive director Mignonne Zaina. “Today is about reminding every girl that she has a day to focus on her rights and stand up against abuse.” United Nations Peacekeeping

Leadership in Conflict Settings

In a region scarred by conflict, girls and young women often bear the brunt of violence. The workshop encouraged participants to engage in community change and leadership, fostering girls’ leadership in conflict zones. Zaina noted: “It’s time for girls to take the lead and say no to anything that harms them.” United Nations Peacekeeping

MONUSCO’s Gender and Child Protection teams raised awareness about UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 2250, underscoring the role of women and youth in peace processes. United Nations Peacekeeping

From Silence to Voice

Nathalie Koné Traoré of MONUSCO spoke directly to survivors: “Break the silence and report your attackers. You have a vital role in restoring peace. Build your leadership, get involved, and make your voice heard!” United Nations Peacekeeping

One participant, Faida Masika, reflected on her experience: “We learned a lot. From now on, we won’t only fight sexual violence but encourage others to start small businesses and challenge negative norms.” United Nations Peacekeeping

Held under the theme “Invest in the power of girls: our leadership, our future,” the event emphasized that empowering girls in Goma is essential to building a more inclusive society.

In a province shaken by instability, this celebration offered girls not just a platform—but a reinvigoration of hope. Through education, leadership development, advocacy, and economic empowerment, the girls of North Kivu are determined to become agents of peace and change. United Nations Peacekeeping
