Thrilling Race: F1 Results From the 2026 Canadian GP

The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix delivered an unforgettable weekend of racing at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Mercedes prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured a dramatic victory, extending his lead in the drivers’ championship. However, the most thrilling storyline of the afternoon was the intense fight for second place between two of the sport’s greatest rivals. For the global sports industry, these epic generational battles are what make Formula 1 a highly lucrative international business.

Antonelli Dominates While Russell Suffers Heartbreak

The race started with a fierce battle at the front between Mercedes teammates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Russell started from pole position, but his race ended in disaster on Lap 30 when his power unit abruptly failed. This sudden retirement handed Antonelli full control of the race, allowing the young Italian to cruise to his fourth consecutive victory of the season.

Behind him, a completely different battle was brewing, keeping fans on the edge of their seats and dominating the post-race headlines.

The Epic Duel: Hamilton vs. Verstappen

With Russell out of the picture, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen found themselves fighting directly for the runner-up spot. Verstappen initially took the advantage, passing Hamilton early in the race when the Ferrari driver reported a brief loss of power.

As the race progressed, Hamilton utilized his medium tires to gradually close the gap. With just six laps remaining, Hamilton deployed his stored battery energy and executed a brilliant move around the outside of Turn 1 to overtake the Red Bull. Reflecting on the intense scrap, Lewis Hamilton says he loved hunting down Max Verstappen in an awesome Canadian GP battle for second, publicly calling his former championship rival “one of the greats.”

For Verstappen, holding on to third place secured his first podium of the 2026 season. Despite the solid points haul, the reigning world champion remains highly demanding of his team’s performance. Recent reports confirm that Verstappen is actively pushing Red Bull despite a great result with a Canada podium, emphasizing that the team still urgently needs to find more straight-line speed to consistently challenge for race wins.

This strong performance in Montreal also answers questions about his recent extracurricular racing activities. Fans and analysts had been heavily debating how Max Verstappen will re-adapt to F1 after his Nurburgring 24h adventure, but his precise driving at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve proved his focus remains entirely intact.

What This Means for the Championship

Hamilton’s impressive second-place finish marks his best result since joining Ferrari, moving him up to fourth in the overall standings. It is a significant boost for the Scuderia, who also saw Charles Leclerc finish fourth. Maintaining this momentum is crucial as the teams prepare for the grueling European leg of the calendar, which requires massive logistical coordination and international travel.

As the championship battle heats up, the advanced tech race between Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull will heavily dictate the rest of the season.
