Johannesburg – The G20 summit South Africa 2025 kicked off in Johannesburg without Donald Trump, who has fully boycotted the event, raising global attention on G20 Ukraine climate discussions at the summit.

U.S. Absence Highlights Deeper Rifts

President Donald Trump has decided to skip the meeting, with his government arguing that South Africa’s push for global cooperation on climate and trade clashes with U.S. priorities — a striking example of how Trump boycotts G20 summit. According to reports, he claims that South Africa’s policies discriminate against its white minority. The boycott is adding tension to this first-ever G20 leaders’ summit held in Africa. Ukraine Plan Draws Criticism

Trump’s absence didn’t stop his influence — he proposed a 28‑point plan to resolve the war in Ukraine, which many say aligns too closely with Russia’s aims. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, pushed back after an urgent call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressing that any peace plan must have “joint support and consensus” from NATO allies.

On the summit’s sidelines, European Union officials reiterated that “nothing about Ukraine should happen without Ukraine,” as stated by European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen. A follow-up meeting is expected at the upcoming EU‑Africa Union summit in Angola. The Washington Post

Climate Impasse at the G20

Climate action is central to the summit, but obstacles remain. South Africa hopes for agreement on clean-energy transitions, debt relief for low‑income countries, and a minerals pact to support green industries. G20+1

However, the G20 is also facing tension around climate finance. According to SAIIA (South African Institute of International Affairs), mobilizing funding for adaptation and just transitions is a key priority under South Africa’s G20 Presidency. SAIIA

South Africa’s Ambitious Agenda

President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized that G20 presents a platform not only for multilateral cooperation but for a bold climate legacy. “We must set a new course,” he said, calling for climate finance that supports both emerging and vulnerable economies.
South Africa’s finance ministers also championed infrastructure investment, launching the Ubuntu Legacy Initiative to finance cross-border development projects across Africa. G20

Despite the U.S. boycott, many see an opportunity: with fewer conflicting agendas, member states may rally around G20 Ukraine climate discussions more effectively. Some believe that without American objections, the summit could produce historic pacts. Africanews

Global and Regional Reaction

Global reaction is mixed. While some Western officials have voiced strong disagreement with Trump’s decision, others praise South Africa for steering the agenda toward sustainable development and global equity. Meanwhile, lawmakers from around the world are rallying behind the push for climate justice and financial reforms. Parliament

South Africa is using its G20 Presidency to highlight how climate change, debt, and inequality are deeply interconnected — especially for African nations that face high climate vulnerability. Polity.org.za
