Film Africa 2025, the UK and Europe’s premier independent film festival, returns to London from 14–23 November with an exciting lineup of over 50 films from 20+ countries, celebrating the richness of African culture cinema and the art of storytelling across the continent.
A Decade of African Storytelling Showcase
Presented by the Royal African Society, the ten-day event will spotlight a powerful African storytelling showcase, with premieres, masterclasses, and discussions at iconic venues including BFI Southbank, BAFTA, and Rich Mix. The festival also honors the late Malian legend Souleymane Cissé and hosts a masterclass with Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan.
Celebrating African Culture and Innovation
Festival curator Keith Shiri emphasized that African cinema is undergoing “tremendous creative expansion,” blending realism and mythology to redefine the continent’s voice in global film. The event will feature a spotlight on the Democratic Republic of Congo, women-led narratives, and Sudanese cinema, each capturing the diversity and resilience of African culture cinema.
Highlights and Premieres
Opening with My Father’s Shadow and closing with Katanga: The Dance of the Scorpions, the festival showcases stories that bridge tradition and modernity. The African storytelling showcase also includes the Symposium on “African Cinema and Liberation” at LSE, where filmmakers Sir John Akomfrah and Billy Woodberry will discuss cinema’s role in reclaiming Africa’s narrative.
Honoring Legacy and New Voices
Film Africa not only celebrates pioneers like Souleymane Cissé but also supports emerging filmmakers through awards for short and feature films, helping shape the next generation of African cinematic talent.
