LAGOS, Nigeria — In a major step toward reducing carbon emissions and stabilizing national telecom operations, MTN Nigeria has entered a long-term commercial partnership with First WATT Renewable Limited. This multi-phase program will deploy advanced renewable energy infrastructure across the telecommunications giant’s mission-critical facilities nationwide. By substituting volatile diesel-powered generation with clean power matrices, the initiative aims to protect critical operational uptime and establish sustainable solutions for the fast-evolving tech economy.

Scaling Clean Power with Advanced Renewable Energy Infrastructure

The comprehensive green framework consists of two core components designed to restructure resource consumption across the company’s network. Under the first phase, an Energy-as-a-Service model will deliver 34 MWp of solar photovoltaic capacity paired with 40 MWh of advanced battery energy storage systems. First WATT will install this decentralized renewable energy infrastructure at key facilities, including regional data centers, switching hubs, cable landing stations, and primary customer service complexes.

The second operational tier focuses on transforming national corporate mobility through the deployment of cleaner transport solutions. The strategic agreement covers the technical integration of reliable renewable energy infrastructure to power high-efficiency 60 kW electric vehicle charging stations. These stations will be distributed across eight prominent company properties located in high-traffic zones, including Ikoyi, Matori, Ojota, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Asaba, Kano, and Ibadan.

This systematic expansion of renewable energy infrastructure addresses the heavy operational overheads that local telecommunications providers face due to unstable national grids. By mitigating a historic reliance on imported diesel, the project will lower direct operating emissions and strengthen corporate business continuity. According to the detailed Businessday technology report, the clean energy network is projected to help avoid an estimated 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions over five years.

Oluwole Eweje, the Chief Executive Officer of WATT Renewable Corporation, stated that this milestone agreement is crucial for fortifying the digital economy’s power backbones. He noted that establishing robust renewable energy infrastructure satisfies a critical requirement for wider electric vehicle adoption by ensuring a cleaner, non-intermittent power supply. Detailed rollout parameters published on the official First WATT Renewable corporate portal outline how hybrid solar setups improve long-term energy reliability for commercial enterprises.

Tobechukwu Okigbo, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, explained that the initiative aligns with their long-term Project Zero environmental master plan. He stated that the continuous adoption of renewable energy infrastructure remains essential for optimizing resource efficiency and achieving strict greenhouse gas reduction targets. This proactive corporate shift represents an evolving trend where prominent market leaders deploy technical solutions to advance sub-regional sustainability, helping protect corporate jobs and green logistics.
