Forty years ago, an ambitious idea emerged in Togo: to create a bank by Africans, for Africa. Today, Paul-Harry Aithnard, Regional Director UEMOA and Managing Director of Ecobank Côte d’Ivoire, reflects on the journey and impact of Ecobank’s mission across the continent.

Celebrating Four Decades of African Banking Leadership

Aithnard emphasizes that Africa has proven it can develop its own champions. “We have shown that Africa can bring forth its own innovators and adapters,” he states. The 40th anniversary is not just a milestone; it is a reminder of the lessons learned and the path ahead.

Tribute to Visionaries

Aithnard pays homage to Gervais Koffi Djondo, whose conviction “Africa first” sparked Ecobank’s journey. He also acknowledges the thousands of employees who embody Ecobank’s mission daily with dedication and passion.

Connecting Economies, Driving Growth

The focus remains on connecting African economies, reducing market gaps, and transforming diversity into shared prosperity. “Our role is to link markets and transform opportunities into inclusive growth,” says Aithnard.

Looking Ahead

Forty years mark the beginning of the next chapter. Aithnard stresses that the journey continues with humility, pride, and determination, paving the way for Africa to cultivate more champions in the banking and financial sectors. Explore more travel insights
