The Republic of Seychelles reaffirmed its dedication to social equality measures and poverty reduction strategies during the 24th Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit, held from 7 to 9 October 2025 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Led by Mr. Conrad Mederic, Seychelles’ Permanent Representative to the African Union and Non-Resident Ambassador to Kenya, the delegation included Ms. Trisha Hoareau, Second Secretary at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Seychelles Pushes for Inclusive and Sustainable Development

The Summit, themed “Leveraging Digitalisation to Deepen Regional Value Chains for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth,” focused on how African nations can harness technology adoption trends to strengthen regional economies. Discussions centered around expanding access to markets, improving regional value chains, and ensuring that development benefits all citizens — a key aspect of Seychelles’ ongoing poverty reduction strategies.

The meeting also addressed peace and security as fundamental pillars for regional growth. Leaders reviewed the outcomes of the 20th Meeting of the COMESA Committee on Peace and Security, reaffirming that economic progress cannot thrive without political stability.

Leadership Transition and Seychelles’ Democratic Commitment

During the Summit, President William Ruto of Kenya assumed the Chairmanship of COMESA, succeeding Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye. The formal handover was symbolized by the passing of the COMESA gavel.

Ambassador Mederic provided updates on Seychelles’ recent Presidential elections, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to democracy and transparency. He expressed gratitude to the COMESA Secretariat and the AU observer mission for their continued assistance during the electoral process.

Seychelles also reiterated its pledge to work with regional partners in promoting social equality measures, sustainable trade, and digital transformation as vital elements of Africa’s growth vision.
