WFP and KOICA Boost Sustainable Community Development in Côte d’Ivoire

The World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a US$9.3 million contribution from the Government of the Republic of Korea, through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), to advance sustainable community development and food security in northern Côte d’Ivoire.

This initiative focuses on strengthening human capital through education, improving nutrition, and empowering rural communities to achieve long-term resilience.

Promoting Nutrition and Education for Stronger Communities

With KOICA’s support, WFP will deliver nutritious, locally sourced meals to 50,000 school children in 200 primary schools across the Bagoué, Bounkani, Poro, and Tchologo regions between 2025 and 2029. These meals aim to enhance students’ concentration, health, and academic performance, forming a foundation for strengthening community bonds through education.

The project will also improve access to hygiene and health education, promoting better hand-washing practices and integrating nutrition awareness into the school system — a key step toward sustainable community development in Côte d’Ivoire.

Empowering Farmers and Local Economies

Beyond school meals, WFP plans to train and support 100 smallholder farmer groups, enhancing both the quality and quantity of their crops. This initiative links farmers directly to school canteens, creating a sustainable local supply chain that stimulates rural economies and strengthens community resilience.

“Our partnership with KOICA represents an investment in Côte d’Ivoire’s future,” said Olivia Hantz, WFP Representative and Country Director. “By strengthening human capital through education and empowering local producers, we’re ensuring that every meal contributes to both a child’s learning and the country’s long-term food security.”

A Shared Vision of Development and Resilience

Kim Sangjun, KOICA Country Director in Côte d’Ivoire, reflected on the program’s deeper meaning:

“This project reflects a powerful lesson from Korea’s own history — that one nutritious meal can unlock a child’s potential and strengthen a nation’s foundation. By linking schools with farmers, we’re not just providing food but building sustainable prosperity.”

The initiative is being implemented with the Government of Côte d’Ivoire, including the Ministry of National Education and Literacy, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Health, ensuring alignment with national priorities for education and food systems.

Building a Stronger Future Together

By combining education, agriculture, and health interventions, WFP and KOICA are laying the groundwork for a self-reliant, food-secure Côte d’Ivoire. Their joint effort is a testament to how strengthening community bonds can lead to inclusive growth and sustainable community development across Africa.

Currently, WFP supports over 166,000 students in 733 schools nationwide, demonstrating its deep commitment to child nutrition, learning, and community empowerment.
