South Africa Expands Local Tourism Campaigns for Sustainable Growth

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, October 13, 2025 — The Portfolio Committee on Tourism has urged all levels of government to strengthen their collaboration in promoting local tourism campaigns, advancing sustainable tourism infrastructure projects, and enhancing international tourism promotion across the country.

Strengthening Tourism Infrastructure Across Provinces

During its week-long oversight visit to Gauteng Province, the committee reviewed the progress of tourism infrastructure projects included in the national oversight priority plan. Members emphasized that heritage and memorial sites — including Evaton Memorial, Sharpeville Memorial, and Boipatong Monument — must be well-maintained and visually appealing to attract both local and international visitors.

The committee called for joint action among municipalities, provincial governments, and communities to preserve and promote these key heritage sites. Improving these locations, the committee noted, will help expand local tourism campaigns that draw travelers to historically significant destinations.

Promoting Sustainability and Economic Growth

At the Cullinan Diamond Mine and Lodge, the committee praised the positive impact of the Green Tourism Incentive Programme, describing it as an example of how sustainable tourism infrastructure projects can stimulate local economies. They recommended making jewelry prices at the Cullinan Diamond shop more affordable to attract domestic tourists and support the South African market.

Similarly, at the Vredefort Dome project — now 96% complete — the committee learned that construction will be finalized by the end of October, with a handover expected early next year. However, it urged swift intervention to ensure the site gains access to municipal services such as water, electricity, and sanitation — vital for sustainable operations and visitor comfort.

Encouraging International Tourism Promotion

The oversight visits also highlighted world-renowned sites like the Cradle of Humankind, Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, Soweto Hotel and Conference Centre, and Hector Peterson Memorial Museum. The committee praised the museum’s tour guide program, which provides valuable employment and training opportunities for local youth — strengthening community-driven local tourism campaigns and enhancing international tourism promotion.

Meanwhile, the People’s Park development project and Creative Hub at Constitutional Hill were recognized for boosting youth employment through arts-based initiatives. Nearly R12 million has been invested in developing these spaces, which serve as cultural and creative attractions.

Building South Africa’s Tourism Future

The Committee reiterated that effective sustainable tourism infrastructure projects are essential to drive growth and support community development. It encouraged partnerships between the public and private sectors to expand marketing efforts and improve the tourist experience nationwide.
