ACCRA, Ghana, October 13, 2025 — The President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, addressed the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women, reaffirming his country’s dedication to promoting women empowerment initiatives, advancing gender equality campaigns, and achieving gender parity in education.

Ghana’s Commitment to Gender Equality

In his address, President Mahama emphasized the importance of the meeting as a continuation of commitments made 30 years ago at the Beijing Conference, which called for the empowerment of women and girls globally. As the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues, he urged African leaders to take transformative actions that ensure sustainable development through the empowerment of women.

The President highlighted that Ghana remains firmly committed to mainstreaming gender in governance and public policy. He cited notable progress, including the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President and the appointment of women to key leadership roles. These milestones, he said, reflect the country’s long-term vision to strengthen women empowerment initiatives and provide equal opportunities for women to lead.

Advancing Gender Parity in Education and Economic Inclusion

President Mahama proudly noted that Ghana has achieved gender parity in education, with equal enrollment of boys and girls in schools. He assured continued government support to sustain this progress through budget allocations and social programs aimed at female empowerment.

Among these efforts is the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program, which supports female-headed households and enhances social inclusion. The President also announced plans to establish a Women’s Development Bank — a move aligned with the African Union’s declaration of 2020–2030 as the Decade of African Women’s Financial and Economic Inclusion.

These gender equality campaigns are part of Ghana’s broader strategy to create a more equitable society where women have access to education, leadership roles, and financial independence.

Building on Progress for the Future

President Mahama concluded by urging continued focus on strengthening existing gains in gender equality while addressing ongoing challenges. He emphasized collaboration between governments, development partners, and civil society organizations to ensure lasting progress in women empowerment initiatives across Africa.
