South Africa joined Austria in celebrating the National Day of Austria, reaffirming their shared values of peace, cooperation, and mutual respect. Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Hon. Andries Nel, represented the South African Government at the event held on October 24, 2025, in Pretoria.

Celebrating Austrian National Day Ceremonies

The Austrian National Day ceremonies mark Austria’s declaration of permanent neutrality on October 26, 1955—a moment that restored its full independence and global standing. Since 1965, this day has been a symbol of Austria’s enduring commitment to diplomacy, peace, and neutrality.

Hon. Andries Nel praised Austria’s strong global presence, emphasizing that its values remain vital in today’s complex world. “Austria’s National Day is more than a remembrance of history—it’s a tribute to peace, dialogue, and cooperation,” he said.

Austria’s Cultural and Global Influence

Austria’s influence extends far beyond politics and diplomacy. From classical music by Mozart and Strauss to the philosophical works of Wittgenstein and Schrödinger, Austria continues to enrich global culture. Vienna’s architecture and innovation in sustainability and environmental leadership further highlight the nation’s progressive vision.

Deepening Bilateral Relations Between Austria and South Africa

The event also underscored the growing strength of bilateral relations Austria South Africa. Following President Alexander Van der Bellen’s State Visit to South Africa in July 2025, both nations pledged to continue fostering collaboration through upcoming Bilateral Consultations in 2026.

Quoting Nobel Laureate Bertha von Suttner, Nel reflected: “Happiness is created and developed in peace, and one of the eternal rights is the individual’s right to live.” He added that this spirit guides both nations’ pursuit of unity and shared prosperity.

A Toast to Enduring Friendship

The evening concluded with a toast celebrating the friendship between South Africa and Austria. Hon. Nel humorously referenced Austria’s famous sparkling wines, symbolizing unity and shared celebration: “What would Austria’s National Day be without the sparkle in the slender glass?”

The ceremony served as a testament to bilateral relations Austria South Africa—a partnership rooted in mutual respect, cultural exchange, and a shared vision for global peace and progress.
