The Basketball Africa League teams and Wave Côte d’Ivoire have unveiled a newly renovated basketball court in Abidjan, enhancing opportunities for youth and local communities. The ceremony took place at Yopougon 4 Paniers, followed by a basketball clinic for 50 boys and girls under 16, and a U-23 3-on-3 tournament for male and female players.
Strengthening Communities Through Basketball
The renovation, a collaboration between the BAL (https://BAL.NBA.com) and Wave, Africa’s fastest-growing mobile money platform, is part of NBA Africa’s initiative to build or upgrade 1,000 basketball courts across the continent over the next decade.
“Participating in the renovation project reflects Wave’s mission to support and invest in the communities we serve,” said Wave Côte d’Ivoire General Manager Katier Bamba. “Basketball connects communities, and we are proud to create modern, accessible spaces where young people can learn, play, and thrive. This project is not just about renovating a court, but about building confidence and inspiring the next generation.”
Commitment to Youth Development
BAL Head of League Operations Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje added, “This renovation shows our commitment to empowering Africa’s youth. Through partnerships like this, including tournaments and safe spaces to play, we aim to leave a lasting impact across Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal.”
Since launching their partnership in March 2025, the BAL and Wave have hosted the “Tournoi des Quartiers” basketball tournaments in Abidjan and Dakar, featuring a 1,000,000 CAF prize for each winning team. The collaboration also provided an all-expenses paid trip for Reine Esther Yao of the U-18 Côte d’Ivoire Women’s National Team to attend the 2025 BAL Finals in Pretoria, South Africa.
Player Development and Community Engagement
The project emphasizes a strong player development curriculum, ensuring young athletes gain both skills and mentorship. By investing in community courts and clinics, the BAL is creating pathways for future stars while promoting inclusivity and accessibility in basketball.
The upgraded court in Abidjan is a tangible example of how bal events africa are fostering local talent and inspiring youth, bridging communities, and strengthening the sport’s presence across the continent.
