Brilliant Keshav Maharaj Performance and Gritty Tristan Stubbs Partnership Lift South Africa in Test Thriller

In an intense South Africa vs Pakistan encounter, Keshav Maharaj’s superb seven-wicket haul and a resilient Tristan Stubbs partnership with Tony de Zorzi turned the tide in South Africa’s favour on Day 2 of the Rawalpindi Test. The Proteas closed the day at 185 for 4, trailing Pakistan’s 333 by 148 runs — their most stable position of the series so far.

Keshav Maharaj Performance Dominates Pakistan’s Batting

Early in the morning, Keshav Maharaj’s performance was nothing short of magical as he demolished Pakistan’s lower order, taking five wickets in a stunning spell to add to his two overnight. His masterclass spin triggered a collapse that saw Pakistan lose their last five wickets for just 17 runs.

Maharaj’s precise control and variation left the hosts in tatters. “Old-fashioned Test cricket,” he said afterward, “helped us claw back.” His spell ensured South Africa’s bowlers maintained momentum and set the stage for their batsmen to respond solidly.

Tristan Stubbs Partnership Anchors the Proteas

When South Africa began their innings, early wickets threatened to undo Maharaj’s hard work. However, a composed Tristan Stubbs partnership with Tony de Zorzi steadied the ship. Together, they added 113 runs for the third wicket — South Africa’s first century stand of the series.

The pair demonstrated patience and maturity, prioritizing survival over aggression. Stubbs reached a well-earned 68* while de Zorzi contributed 55, both displaying smart shot selection against Pakistan’s spinners. Their steady approach frustrated Pakistan, who missed key review opportunities early in the day.

Pakistan’s Fightback and Missed Opportunities

Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Asif Afridi and Shaheen Shah Afridi, tried to claw back late in the session. Asif dismissed de Zorzi and Dewald Brevis in quick succession, using clever variations to spark hope for the home side. Yet, the Tristan Stubbs partnership continued to anchor South Africa’s reply.

Earlier, Pakistan’s innings was built around Saud Shakeel’s 66 and Agha Salman’s 45 before Keshav Maharaj performance dismantled the tail. Within 18 balls, he wiped out the rest of the lineup, showcasing why he remains one of South Africa’s most reliable spinners.

The Road Ahead in the South Africa vs Pakistan Encounter

As play resumes, South Africa will look to continue their disciplined batting, hoping the Tristan Stubbs partnership can extend their control. Pakistan, meanwhile, will rely on their bowlers to break through early and regain dominance in this gripping South Africa vs Pakistan encounter.

With Maharaj’s heroics and Stubbs’ composure, the Rawalpindi Test has set the stage for an unforgettable finish — a fine example of patience, precision, and classic Test cricket strategy.
