Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding nationwide internet access. Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP) met with executives from Group Vivendi Africa (GVA) to discuss the company’s plans to launch high-speed fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services aimed at driving internet services expansion and digital inclusion.

Government Endorses Affordable Broadband Initiative

During the meeting, the minister supports broadband development, commending GVA’s affordable pricing model as a major milestone toward reducing data costs and enhancing access to reliable internet. He also announced plans to engage the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to help address infrastructure access issues and accelerate rollout progress.

The Minister further encouraged GVA to present a detailed proposal outlining its investment strategy, service plans, and specific areas for government collaboration. He also suggested a potential partnership with Canal+ to integrate content streaming with broadband services—an initiative that could reshape Ghana’s digital entertainment and connectivity ecosystem.

Expanding Digital Access Across Ghana

Mr. Jean-François Dubois, Chief Executive Officer of Group Vivendi Africa, shared that GVA—part of the Canal+ Group—already operates in nine African nations and plans to replicate its successful model in Ghana. The internet services expansion project will begin in Accra and Kumasi, offering affordable, unlimited broadband access to households.

According to Dubois, GVA’s mission aligns closely with Ghana’s digital transformation agenda by ensuring that every home has access to fast, reliable connectivity. The minister supports broadband rollout, noting that public-private partnerships are crucial to making internet access equitable and affordable for all citizens.

Linking AI Innovation and Broadband Growth

The growing role of AI tools like ChatGPT and broadband expansion was also highlighted as a catalyst for education, business development, and technology access. Reliable broadband is essential for supporting AI-driven platforms that empower local entrepreneurs, students, and small enterprises.

A Step Toward a Digitally Empowered Future

This collaboration positions Ghana as a leader in Africa’s internet services expansion efforts, combining government vision and private-sector expertise to bridge the digital divide. For travelers interested in discovering Ghana’s emerging tech hubs, visit travel.afrikeye.com.
