Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, now 82, has officially given up smoking cigarettes to preserve his stamina for the band’s ongoing performances. Speaking in June 2026, the legendary musician revealed he finally kicked the lifelong habit to keep pace with frontman Mick Jagger on stage. This health decision marks a major shift for the rock icon, who was long famous for his hard-living lifestyle.

Richards explained that walking away from cigarettes was necessary to maintain his breathing and energy levels during their intensive live sets. The guitarist noted that performing alongside Jagger, who is known for his relentless onstage movement, requires great physical endurance. Giving up the tobacco dependency has significantly improved his performance quality during recent rehearsals.

The rock icon also shared insights into his expanding family life, noting that he recently became a great-grandfather. Balancing his legendary music career with his role as a family patriarch has given him a fresh perspective on longevity. He emphasized that staying healthy is essential if he wants to continue touring the world with his bandmates.

Why Kicking the Cigarette Habit Matters for the Rolling Stones

For decades, Richards was seen as virtually indestructible, making his decision to stop smoking a surprise to many long-term fans. He admitted that walking away from the substance after more than half a century was difficult but ultimately rewarding. The change has allowed him to approach their complex musical arrangements with renewed focus and physical strength.

Richards acknowledged that his past lifestyle was a core part of his public image, but he realized his body needed a break. He stated that he does not miss the cigarettes and is feeling much better since making the adjustment. The iconic guitarist continues to practice daily, ensuring his signature guitar riffs remain as sharp as ever.

His bandmates have noticed the positive impact of his new lifestyle during their latest studio sessions. Jagger, who has long maintained a strict fitness regimen, welcomed the change as the group looks toward future creative projects. With his smoking days behind him, Richards is focused entirely on his musical legacy and his family.
