Humanitarian Aid by Vietnamese Soldiers: UNISFA Peacekeeping Engineering Restores Abyei Bridge

Applause and relief filled the air as the people of Abyei celebrated the reopening of Banton Bridge, a vital link across River Kiir. The bridge, long in disrepair, had hindered movement, endangered commuters, and separated communities. Its reconstruction marks a milestone in community infrastructure restoration and peacebuilding efforts led by the Vietnamese Level-2 Engineering Company (VMECC-4) under UNISFA.

Rapid Reconstruction Amid Challenging Conditions

Despite technical and environmental challenges, the VMECC-4 team completed the bridge in just seven days. Each segment was rebuilt carefully to ensure the structure could support trucks, traders, and everyday commuters. The project was carried out amid the rainy season and limited resource access, highlighting the skill and dedication of these peacekeeping engineers.

Vietnamese Soldiers Contributing to Peace

“With this bridge, we are honored to contribute to peace in Abyei in a lasting way,” said Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Van Cuong, VMECC-4 Commander. “Vietnamese peacekeepers worked to create peace, brick by brick, in addition to defending it.”

The reconstruction removed dangerous crossings and long detours to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities, reconnecting southern villages to Abyei’s center. Villagers celebrated with singing and dancing as the final bolts were tightened, while blue-helmet engineers stood proudly alongside their work. Acting Chief Administration Justice Charles Abyei stated, “This bridge is more than infrastructure. It represents cooperation and a common resolve.”

Beyond Construction: Humanitarian Support

VMECC-4 went further by providing food and essential supplies to the local population, emphasizing that empathy and humanitarian support are as crucial as concrete structures. This effort aligns with UNISFA’s mission to protect civilians, foster peace, and facilitate humanitarian access in Abyei since 2011.

Colonel Alexander De Lima, UNISFA’s Force Chief of Staff, praised the engineers’ efforts: “Their dedication shows how engineering can directly strengthen security and stability. It’s about connection—between people, communities, and nations working together for peace.”

The reopening of Banton Bridge symbolizes renewed hope, mobility, and unity for Abyei. One rebuilt connection at a time, the bridge now carries not only people and vehicles but also the spirit of collaboration shaping the region’s future.
