The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Supra Mahumapelo, has strongly condemned the continued killing of civilians and attacks on healthcare facilities in Sudan. His statement comes as the African Union security operations Sudan intensify efforts to stabilize the region and protect vulnerable communities.

African Union’s Decisive Response to the Sudan Crisis

Mr. Mahumapelo welcomed the African Union response to Sudan crisis, emphasizing the importance of coordinated regional action at this critical juncture. “It is imperative to stop what is happening in Sudan and restore peace and stability,” he said, commending the AU for its leadership during this humanitarian emergency.

He further highlighted that over half of Sudan’s population now requires urgent life-saving assistance, a situation worsened by repeated violations of international law. The committee expressed full support for the AU Peace and Security Council’s emergency meeting to address the rapidly deteriorating situation in the country.

Parliament Demands Justice for Sudan’s Victims

In a firm appeal, the committee added its voice to that of the South African government, urging Sudan’s armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces to agree to an immediate and verifiable ceasefire. The Sudan Parliament seeks justice for victims, calling for accountability and an end to external interference that fuels the conflict.

Mr. Mahumapelo stressed that all parties must respect humanitarian principles, ensure safe passage for civilians, and protect medical workers on the ground. “All external actors must adhere to international law and cease any form of support or supply to armed groups,” he added.

Regional Cooperation and Peace Efforts

The committee reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to working closely with the African Union security operations Sudan initiative and other regional stakeholders to end hostilities. It called for a united African approach that prioritizes peace, justice, and humanitarian relief.

These efforts also reflect the broader African Union response to Sudan crisis, emphasizing peacebuilding and reconstruction once stability is restored.
