Range-Extended Vehicle Africa: Changan Hunter REEV Set to Lead EV Pickup Truck Launch in South Africa

South Africa’s automotive industry is gearing up for a groundbreaking moment with the range-extended vehicle Africa debut of the Changan Hunter REEV — the world’s first range-extended EV pickup truck South Africa is set to welcome this November.

A New Era of Electric Mobility

The Changan Hunter REEV (Range-Extended Electric Vehicle) blends electric innovation with classic pickup toughness. Featuring a 31.2kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery and a 2.0-litre petrol generator, the Hunter delivers 145km of pure electric range and up to 1,000km combined — redefining what’s possible for the electric truck launch Africa market.

Unlike hybrids, where the engine powers the wheels, the REEV uses its petrol engine solely to recharge the battery, extending range without sacrificing performance. With 200kW power and 470Nm torque, it offers robust capability while cutting fossil fuel dependency.

South Africa’s Role in Automotive Innovation

This range-extended vehicle Africa launch underscores South Africa’s status as the continent’s automotive manufacturing hub. The nation produces over 500,000 vehicles annually — over 80% of Africa’s total output. Backed by skilled labor, industrial capacity, and government incentives, the country is becoming a prime base for EV and hybrid production.

Chinese and Indian automakers — including Changan, BAIC, Mahindra, Tata, and GWM — are expanding local assembly lines. South Africa’s infrastructure and regional trade links make it the ideal launchpad for future electric mobility innovations.

Design and Technology

The Hunter REEV combines futuristic aesthetics with practicality. It sports LED headlamps, a redesigned grille, 18-inch alloys, and a smart cabin equipped with digital wraparound displays, wireless charging, Wi-Fi connectivity, and over-the-air updates.

Changan South Africa calls the model “a reimagining of the pickup for the future.” Each unit will come with a five-year or 150,000km warranty, with pricing to be revealed at launch.

The Continental EV Revolution

Africa’s EV ecosystem continues to expand, with countries like Kenya, Egypt, and Morocco developing charging networks and assembly plants. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is expected to strengthen supply chains for EV components, boosting continent-wide adoption.
