Ethiopia is taking a historic step in African air transport development through the ambitious development of Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), set to become the continent’s largest aviation hub by 2030. Strategically located about 40 kilometres southwest of Addis Ababa, the airport aims to ease growing capacity pressures at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) while strengthening Ethiopia’s position in regional and global aviation.
Phased Airport Modernization Project
The airport modernization project at Bishoftu follows a phased development plan, enabling infrastructure growth in line with operational needs and increasing demand. The first phase, valued at approximately USD 12.5 billion, is expected to be completed by 2030, accommodating up to 60 million passengers annually. Upon full development, the airport will handle up to 110 million passengers, making it the largest airport in Africa and a key driver of trade, tourism, and international investment.
“Bishoftu International Airport marks a historic leap in Africa’s aviation journey,” said Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. “With its advanced technology, sustainable design, and unmatched connectivity, this airport positions Ethiopia as the continent’s aviation capital, serving as a gateway connecting Africa to the world. We invite global financiers to join us in supporting this transformative initiative.”
Ethiopian Airlines Projects Lead the Way
Ethiopian Airlines Group, the main project sponsor, is spearheading the initiative with financial backing from the African Development Bank as the Initial Mandated Lead Arranger. Technical and financial advisory support is provided by Dar Al Handasah Consultants and KPMG, while Clyde & Co offers legal guidance. Progress is accelerating, with the release of the Project Information Memorandum, Financial Model, and related documents to potential lenders marking a major milestone toward financial close. Prequalification of EPC contractors is underway, with bid submissions expected by mid-December 2025, signaling the move from planning to procurement and implementation.
Global Investment Spotlight
The Bishoftu project will be featured at the Africa Investment Forum Market Days in Rabat, Morocco, from 26–28 November 2025, attracting interest from global financiers and investors. With its scale, strategic vision, and leadership in ethiopian airlines projects, the airport exemplifies Ethiopia’s commitment to international airport expansion and broader African air transport development.
Bishoftu International Airport represents a defining national initiative and a symbol of Africa’s growing ambition in aviation, infrastructure, and connectivity.
