GABI Launches Global Search for the Architects of Africa’s Economic Future
Africa currently hosts 12 of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies, yet the architects of this quiet transformation often operate below the global radar. Moving to bridge this visibility gap, the Global Africa Business Initiative has launched a continent-wide search for Unstoppable Africans—the entrepreneurs, investors, and visionaries actively translating macroeconomic promise into tangible market realities.
The community-led campaign to find these Unstoppable Africans serves as a prelude to Unstoppable Africa 2026 , a high-level summit co-convened by the United Nations and the African Union in New York this September. By shifting the global narrative away from traditional developmental aid and toward commercial innovation, the initiative seeks to spotlight the business leaders rewriting what is possible across their respective industries.
The Search for Unstoppable Africans Across Five Key Sectors
Rather than focusing on political figures, the search zeroes in on five critical sectors driving Africa’s structural evolution: energy, digital transformation, trade, creative industries, and sports. Each category reflects a pillar of the continent’s future global competitiveness. The energy and digital categories aim to highlight those building the infrastructure necessary for a modern economy, from sustainable power grids to tech-driven financial inclusion. Meanwhile, the trade focus underscores the growing importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area in strengthening regional supply chains and creating localized economic opportunities.
Equally significant is the inclusion of the creative and sporting sectors. Long viewed merely as cultural exports, film, fashion, music, and sports are rapidly maturing into multi-billion-dollar industries. These sectors are creating substantial employment for Africa’s booming youth demographic and projecting potent soft power globally. Recognizing Unstoppable Africans in these spaces acknowledges the shifting paradigms of the continent’s economic influence.
For global investors and African policymakers alike, the campaign serves as a vital barometer for where the continent’s most dynamic growth is occurring. Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the UN Global Compact , noted that the initiative is designed to provide a global platform for the innovators shaping markets and strengthening economies every day. By identifying these Unstoppable Africans, the initiative offers international partners a clearer map of the operational landscape.
The public nomination window , which opened in mid-July, will close on September 9, 2026. Following the selection process, five distinct changemakers will be elevated through a global storytelling series before the main summit gathers business leaders and policymakers at the Marriott Marquis on September 20 and 21 under the theme of powering business and scaling economies. Media professionals looking to cover the summit can also apply for media accreditation ahead of the event.
As global markets look for new frontiers of growth amidst shifting supply chains and geopolitical realignments, the focus on Africa’s private sector leaders is timely. The true value of this initiative lies not just in the recognition of individual brilliance, but in signaling to the rest of the world that Africa’s economic narrative is now being authored by its own business innovators. The Unstoppable Africans selected this September will offer a compelling preview of the continent’s commercial future.
