Angola Intensifies National Strategy to Eradicate Polio 2026

In a robust push to safeguard public health, Angola is translating recent field experiences into decisive, concrete actions to completely eradicate polio. Having successfully conducted two massive national polio vaccination campaigns alongside two synchronized cross-border initiatives with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Namibia, the nation has managed to protect over nine million children under the age of five.

Now, the focus shifts to maximizing these gains. During the National Post-Campaign Evaluation Workshop organized by the Ministry of Health’s National Immunization Program and supported by the World Health Organization (WHO)—key stakeholders gathered to pinpoint operational hurdles, identify best practices, and refine future routine immunization services.

Strengthening Surveillance and Routine Immunization

The extensive three-day evaluation scrutinized administrative vaccination data, quality surveys (LQAS), independent monitoring, and logistics management. By analyzing these critical areas, health officials identified vital opportunities to boost campaign quality and expand the health services’ capacity to reach all eligible children—especially those residing in remote and hard-to-reach zones.

A central topic of discussion was the urgent need to fortify surveillance for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) alongside broader environmental monitoring. These early detection mechanisms are essential to rapidly counter any potential circulation of the poliovirus and protect the progress Angola has secured. Furthermore, participants emphasized the importance of strategies such as door-to-door vaccination and better vaccine supply management to effectively target ‘zero-dose’ or under-immunized children.

Dr. Alda de Morais, the national coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization, stressed that the evaluation represents a crucial strategic opportunity to bring together key stakeholders.

“The findings of this evaluation will enable us to improve the quality of future campaigns and routine vaccination. We are committed to ensuring that no child is left unvaccinated and that the gains achieved by the country are protected and expanded,” Dr. de Morais stated.

Cross-Border Coordination and Future Commitments

Dr. Nirakar Panda, program coordinator for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in Angola, highlighted that eradicating the disease demands continuous learning and the strategic use of data. He advocated for strengthened cross-border coordination, the local recruitment of vaccination teams to maximize trust and coverage, and precise micro-planning based on updated population data.

Following the workshop, a comprehensive national action plan will be rolled out. This plan will detail priority recommendations, define strict implementation deadlines, and establish robust monitoring mechanisms to track the execution of agreed-upon measures. By uniting representatives from provincial health directorates, reference laboratories, UNICEF, WHO, AFENET, and World Vision, Angola is solidifying a collective, nationwide commitment to a polio-free future.

For healthcare professionals, NGOs, and analysts tracking African political news, Angola’s methodical approach offers a powerful blueprint for public health management. If you are traveling to the region for medical coordination or research, consulting comprehensive African travel guides is highly recommended for a seamless visit.
