The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has enhanced its efforts to strengthen mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution among its senior officials through specialized training held at the Clingendael Institute of International Relations in the Netherlands. This initiative reinforces ECOWAS conflict prevention strategies and supports regional stability across West Africa.
Building Regional Expertise in Conflict Resolution
The five-day program, conducted from 27 to 31 October 2025 in The Hague, brought together ECOWAS senior officials, Special Representatives, Resident and Permanent Representatives, members of the Mediation and Security Council (MSC), and the Council of the Wise. Participants developed advanced skills in negotiation, mediation, and consensus-building—key components of sustainable peace and effective regional peacebuilding programs.
Organized by the Netherlands Institute of International Relations “Clingendael” with financial backing from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the training was part of the 10th Edition of the Clingendael Academy Programme on Peace Negotiations. It aimed to deepen understanding of the principles, processes, and phases of mediation and to promote strategic thinking in international diplomacy.
Strengthening ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Frameworks
Since 2015, ECOWAS and the Clingendael Academy have collaborated to advance ECOWAS conflict prevention strategies and regional peace initiatives. The Academy, which trains over 3,000 diplomats and professionals annually, is globally recognized for its leadership in international diplomatic education. The partnership equips ECOWAS practitioners, mediators, and peacebuilders with tools to handle complex political and humanitarian challenges effectively.
Through practical simulations and scenario-building exercises, participants examined conflict drivers, assessed risks, and developed informed strategies for effective mediation and crisis response. These conflict resolution workshops in West Africa play a crucial role in enhancing regional cooperation and ensuring that peacebuilding efforts are locally driven and sustainable.
Promoting Lasting Peace and Regional Stability
The training underscored the importance of learning from past mediation efforts to improve future ECOWAS interventions. By reflecting on challenges and achievements, officials can better align policies with peace and security objectives across the region.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to fostering peace, stability, and inclusive dialogue in West Africa. Programs like this contribute significantly to the organization’s long-term vision of creating a peaceful and united regional community.
