World Olympics Day was celebrated at the national level in Akordet on November 1, drawing the participation of senior government and PFDJ officials, along with leaders from national and regional sports federations. The annual celebration highlights the growing strength of Eritrea national sports and the country’s dedication to nurturing athletic talent for global recognition.

Promoting Eritrea’s Sports Culture and Infrastructure

Mr. Idris Saleh, Director General of Culture and Sports in the Gash-Barka Region, emphasized the great responsibility of hosting such a prestigious event. He expressed his commitment to developing athletes who will honor Eritrea in future Eritrea Olympic events and other international competitions.

President of the National Olympic Committee, Mr. Michael Teklemicael, stated that hosting the event in Akordet was a tribute to the Gash-Barka Region’s contribution to Eritrea’s athletic success. The region, he noted, has vast potential for building a stronger Eritrea sports infrastructure and producing talented Olympians.

Encouraging Youth and Community Sports Participation

The event featured various cultural and educational programs, alongside large-scale community sports activities. Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the Gash-Barka Region, pointed out that the research presented during the event highlighted the importance of integrating sports development into institutional and public initiatives. He called for local efforts to empower young athletes and help them excel on international stages like the Eritrea Olympic events.

Strengthening Eritrea’s Global Sports Presence

Celebrated for the 77th time worldwide and the 16th time nationally, World Olympics Day symbolizes Eritrea’s growing commitment to advancing sports and encouraging youth participation. The event reinforces national unity and pride in the country’s sporting achievements.
