AU Congratulates Museveni on Uganda Elections Win

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has officially recognized the outcome of the January 15, 2026, polls. In a formal statement, the AU congratulates Museveni on Uganda elections win, following the incumbent’s successful bid for a seventh term in office.

This diplomatic endorsement comes after the Electoral Commission of Uganda confirmed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni secured 71.61% of the total votes cast. The Chairperson praised the general conduct of the electoral process, signaling a continued partnership between the continental body and the East African nation.

AU Commends Peaceful Conduct and Democratic Gains

In his address, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed satisfaction with how the citizens of Uganda approached the polls. He noted that the peaceful nature of the exercise reflects a strong commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, and security within the East African regional context.

Beyond the presidency, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) maintained a significant presence, securing a majority of parliamentary seats. The AU chief emphasized that the AU congratulates Museveni on Uganda elections win as a step toward further national development and stability.

Recognition of International Observation Missions

A key highlight of the AU’s statement was the commendation of the Joint Election Observation Mission. Led by former Nigerian President [suspicious link removed], the mission included representatives from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Youssouf lauded the “sterling leadership” of the observers in ensuring a transparent monitoring process. Such oversight is vital for maintaining standards across the continent, similar to the roles played by African Union peacekeepers in Sudan to ensure regional safety.

Challenges and Opposition Performance

Despite the official commendation, the election cycle was not without its hurdles. The government implemented an internet shutdown during the voting period, citing the need to prevent the spread of misinformation.

President Museveni, aged 81, faced a spirited challenge from Bobi Wine, the 43-year-old musician-turned-politician. Wine garnered 24.72% of the vote, representing a significant portion of the youth electorate.

The AU’s Ongoing Commitment to Governance

The African Union Commission reiterated its dedication to supporting effective governance across all member states. This includes fostering environments where rural women development initiatives in Africa can thrive and ensuring environmental sustainability, such as pangolin species protection efforts.

As the AU congratulates Museveni on Uganda elections win, the focus now shifts to the inauguration and the administration’s goals for the next term. The continental body remains a partner in Uganda’s journey toward long-term economic and social development.
