The Ministry of Agriculture in Eritrea’s Southern Red Sea Region recently conducted a specialized training program aimed at improving expertise in red sea agricultural projects and enhancing local date farming practices. The initiative targeted both exemplary farmers and agricultural professionals, equipping them with advanced skills in date cultivation and post-harvest management.

Enhancing Skills Through Training Programs for Agriculture

Mr. Mohammed Abdulrahman, head of the regional agriculture office, explained that the program’s main objective is to strengthen farmers’ and experts’ knowledge in date farming. This approach aims to increase yield, ensure a consistent supply to local markets, and support sustainable agricultural development along the Red Sea coast.

The training combined both theoretical and practical sessions, covering topics such as:

  • Management and treatment of date palm trees

  • Cross-breeding techniques for improved varieties

  • Effective fertilization methods

  • Pest and disease control for healthy crops

  • Post-harvest management and product collection

  • Economic benefits and market potential of dates

Building Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Trainees highlighted the importance of sustaining such farming development courses to continue improving skills and ensuring long-term growth in the date farming sector. The program also emphasizes knowledge-sharing and hands-on experience to develop a new generation of agricultural experts in the region.

This initiative is part of broader training programs for agriculture aimed at modernizing farming techniques and boosting productivity in Eritrea’s Red Sea Region, contributing to local economic growth and food security.
