The globe is bracing for unprecedented climate disruptions as forecasters track what is shaping up to be the strongest El Niño on record. This powerful weather system is expected to act in tandem with long-term climate changes, potentially delivering the hottest year ever recorded and triggering a chain reaction of severe weather events across multiple continents.
While El Niño traditionally alters global rainfall patterns, the upcoming cycle is raising immediate red flags among agricultural economists and risk management experts, particularly concerning food security and extreme environmental hazards.
The Hidden Threat to South Africa
In South Africa, the approaching El Niño pattern carries a dual threat. Historically, these cycles bring prolonged dry spells that severely disrupt agricultural output. Between 2014 and 2016, similar drought conditions decimated crop yields, causing maize production to fall drastically short of the nation’s annual demand.
However, experts note that the country currently benefits from a significant buffer. Thanks to two consecutive La Niña seasons, dam levels are full and soil moisture is exceptionally high. Despite this agricultural cushioning, there is a major hidden threat in severe weather coming to South Africa: catastrophic wildfires.
Risk management experts warn that the abundant vegetation growth resulting from recent wet seasons has created an enormous fuel load. When combined with the intense heatwaves and dry winds typical of an El Niño summer, the region faces the perfect recipe for systemic wildfires. These fires threaten to disrupt agriculture, water supplies, and critical infrastructure simultaneously.
A Looming Global Hunger Crisis
The impacts of this severe weather extend far beyond localized natural disasters. According to recent warnings from the UN’s World Food Programme, the cascading effects of droughts and erratic rainfall could have catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
Forecasts indicate that the ensuing agricultural disruptions driven by El Niño could push 50m people into acute hunger next year. This alarming figure would add to the 225 million people across 45 countries already facing dangerous levels of food insecurity.
The hardest-hit regions are expected to be Central and South America, the Caribbean, and southern Africa. In southern Africa, the most severe impacts on food security are projected to materialize during the 2027 to 2028 lean season, right after the main harvest is exhausted. As crop yields fall and export markets tighten, global food prices are likely to surge, further straining vulnerable populations.
Governments and agricultural sectors worldwide are being urged to treat these severe weather warnings not as isolated seasonal events, but as major systemic risks requiring immediate, proactive disaster management and anticipatory relief funding.
