The Ministry of Health of Eritrea, in partnership with the Ministries of Agriculture and Land, Water and Environment, as well as UN partners, has launched the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week under the theme “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The week-long campaign runs from 17 to 24 November, aiming to boost disease prevention efforts nationwide.

Focus on Antimicrobial Resistance and Public Awareness

During the event, experts presented discussion papers on Multi-Drug Resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae, cross-sectional studies on bacterial pathogens, and investigations into antimicrobial resistance patterns in urinary tract infections. Participants engaged in extensive discussions to identify strategies for improving public health outcomes and effective eritrean health campaigns.

The launch, held on 17 November at the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers Hall in Asmara, featured messages of support from partner institutions emphasizing the importance of collective action in safeguarding public health.

Promoting Safe and Effective Medicine Use

Dr. Goitom Mebrahtu, Director General of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health, highlighted that this year’s theme calls for urgent action to protect the health of current and future generations. Dr. Mulugeta Russom, Head of Drug Side-Effect Management at the National Medicine and Food Administration, noted that the campaign aims to enhance awareness among health and agricultural professionals, as well as the public, to ensure proper use of medicines and antibiotics, in line with Eritrea’s public health policies.
