A major new partnership between the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and Zipline International, Inc. is set to transform Healthcare Infrastructure Africa, strengthen emergency readiness, and expand access to essential medicines through advanced drone-powered logistics. The collaboration aims to reinforce the continent’s long-term vision of resilient, technology-driven, and equitable health systems.

Driving a New Era of Health Technology and Resilience

Under the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Africa CDC and Zipline will work together to improve health outcomes, enhance economic opportunities, and connect remote and underserved communities with life-saving supplies. The move accelerates efforts to scale modern delivery methods and expand Health Technology Africa solutions to every corner of the continent.

The partnership aligns with the Africa CDC Strategic Plan (2023–2027) and supports the Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) agenda. It also strengthens African-led strategies focused on innovation, institutional capacity, workforce empowerment, and digital transformation across public health systems.

This collaboration is guided by five core principles:

1. Member State Ownership and Leadership

All activities will be led by AU Member States with coordination from Africa CDC.

2. Equity and Access

The partnership prioritizes remote, vulnerable, and underserved communities to improve Healthcare Infrastructure Africa in areas that need it most.

3. Sustainability and Sovereignty

The initiative strengthens domestic systems, integrates with existing public health infrastructure, and supports local industry capacity.

4. Transparency and Accountability

Both organisations commit to open communication, shared reporting, and strong ethical and legal safeguards, including data protection.

5. Innovation for Impact

Efforts will focus on scalable, evidence-based innovations with measurable impact on epidemic response, early warning systems, and frontline service delivery.

Expanding Drone Integration and Early Warning Systems

Through the MoU, Africa CDC and Zipline will jointly support capacity-building programs, operational research, epidemic preparedness, emergency response, and workforce training. Governments will be supported in integrating drone logistics—also known as UAV Healthcare Applications—as part of their national supply chains.

This approach strengthens real-time surveillance systems and ensures continued service delivery in remote, hard-to-reach, and disaster-prone areas, further improving Healthcare Infrastructure Africa.

Dr Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, emphasized the importance of this step:
“By leveraging advanced drone technology, we can connect communities long isolated from essential care, empower our health workforce with real-time data and supplies, and build a continent that responds faster, works smarter, and saves more lives.”

Zipline will support this integration with world-leading autonomous aircraft networks, warehousing capabilities, and data-driven supply chain expertise.

Caitlin Burton, Chief Executive Officer of Zipline Africa, added:
“By combining African leadership with Zipline’s technology and operational expertise, we’re strengthening supply chains, improving early-warning systems, and ensuring every community has reliable access to care. This is innovation in service of health equity — and in service of Africa’s future.”

Strengthening Supply Chains Across the Continent

Since its first deployment in Rwanda in 2016, Zipline has grown into the world’s largest autonomous delivery network. Its drones support last-mile health delivery across several African nations, improving supply chains, supporting rapid outbreak detection, and stimulating economic development.

The MoU also commits Africa CDC and Zipline to knowledge exchange, joint policy discussions, advocacy programs, and research initiatives designed to showcase Africa’s leadership in Health Technology Africa and health system resilience.

This partnership supports the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and advances the continent’s shared vision of a prosperous, self-reliant Africa built on innovation, sustainability, and strong Healthcare Infrastructure Africa.
