LILONGWE — Following the detection of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in environmental samples in Blantyre, Malawi has launched a rapid, nationwide response to stop the virus from spreading. Working alongside the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the Ministry of Health is executing an aggressive strategy to ensure every child is protected.
The WHO has provided critical technical support, helping coordinate campaign logistics, health worker training, and data management systems. Independent Lot Quality Assurance Surveys (LQAS) have confirmed the high quality of these vaccination rounds, reflecting strong operational standards.
The response began with a targeted “Round Zero” in eight high-risk southern districts, successfully reaching over 1.53 million children. Building on this success, Malawi conducted three nationwide rounds of the Novel Oral Polio Vaccine (nOPV2) between April and June 2026, protecting more than 7 million children across all 29 districts.

Beyond the statistics, the success of the campaign relies on the determination of frontline health workers. In remote areas like the mountainous village of Pensulo, health teams trek for hours across difficult terrain to reach isolated communities. This “no child left behind” approach is bolstered by the support of community leaders, volunteers, and parents who have played a vital role in building trust and overcoming barriers to immunization.
Malawi’s efforts are part of a broader, synchronized regional strategy. By aligning its vaccination schedules with neighboring Zambia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, Malawi is helping to create a unified front against the poliovirus across southern Africa.
Every child vaccinated is a step toward a world where polio is a thing of the past. By sustaining investment in immunization and maintaining high vigilance, Malawi is not just fighting a current outbreak—it is securing a healthy future for the next generation.
