Mercy Ships Surgical Care: Transforming Lives Across Africa

Mercy Ships surgical care leads the way in bringing hope, health, and life-changing operations to underserved communities across Africa. In 2025, Mercy Ships operated both the Africa Mercy® and the Global Mercy™ in two countries simultaneously for the second year in a row. This milestone allowed the organization to expand medical programs, strengthen partnerships, and increase sustainable surgical capacity continent-wide.

Inspiring Volunteers Driving Mercy Ships Surgical Care

Among the remarkable volunteers this year was Dr. Justina Seyi-Olajide, the first female African pediatric surgeon to serve with Mercy Ships. She stated, “Coming from a low- or middle-income country isn’t a reason to stay on the sidelines. I want to be part of the change.” Her dedication highlights the essential role of skilled volunteers in expanding access to specialized surgery in West Africa.

This year, Mercy Ships welcomed over 3,240 volunteers from 75 nations and more than 2,120 national crew members, including surgeons, nurses, dentists, engineers, cooks, and support staff—all working together to provide free, safe surgeries.

Life-Changing Surgeries and Stories

Among the most heartwarming stories in 2025 was a blind mother and daughter who regained their sight through cataract surgery aboard the Africa Mercy. Moments like these are at the core of Mercy Ships surgical care, restoring mobility, dignity, and hope to patients who would otherwise have no access to essential medical services.

By year-end, Mercy Ships had treated over 2,850 surgical patients, performing more than 3,060 surgeries, ranging from maxillofacial and orthopedic procedures to cataract and women’s health surgeries. Every operation reflects a commitment to excellence, compassion, and respect for every patient.

Advancing National Health Systems

Mercy Ships continues to influence healthcare systems beyond direct surgery. In Sierra Leone, the National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anesthesia Plans (NSOAPs) were introduced at PASHeF 2025 with support from Mercy Ships. These programs aim to strengthen African health systems and advance local leadership in health development.

Education and training remain core to Mercy Ships’ vision. In 2025, over 838 healthcare professionals from 13 African nations participated in training programs, totaling more than 228,540 hours. Notable collaborations include the Université Gamal Abdel Nasser de Conakry in Guinea, which trained local professionals to deliver over 15,290 dental procedures to more than 2,040 patients.

Participants came from Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, and Uganda, contributing to a stronger surgical workforce for the future.

Preparing for 2026 and Beyond

The Africa Mercy entered an extended Annual Maintenance Period (AMP) to upgrade hospital equipment and ship systems, preparing for a return to Tamatave, Madagascar in May 2026. Meanwhile, the Global Mercy will complete its Sierra Leone mission before beginning service in Ghana in August 2026.

Mercy Ships also collaborates with partners like Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) to ensure patients in remote areas can access surgical care. Additionally, the organization welcomed Dr. Michelle White as CEO, bringing hands-on volunteer experience and operational expertise to lead the next chapter of innovation in healthcare.

Celebrating Impact

With unwavering dedication from volunteers, crew, and supporters, Mercy Ships has strengthened partnerships, trained thousands of professionals, and transformed lives. As 2026 begins, Mercy Ships surgical care continues to deliver hope, safety, and free surgeries to the people who need them most across Africa.
