Gunmen killed nine people and wounded at least ten others in a Johannesburg township mass shooting in Bekkersdal, an impoverished area southwest of South Africa’s largest city, police confirmed on Sunday. The attack occurred late Saturday night near an informal tavern in Bekkersdal, approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Johannesburg. According to South African police, assailants arrived in two vehicles and opened fire on patrons inside and outside the tavern before fleeing the scene.
Police initially reported that ten people had been killed, but later revised the death toll to nine after confirming hospital records. Ten others sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.
